Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was a German composer, pianist and conductor of the early Romantic period. A prodigy who wrote his Octet at sixteen, he travelled widely and turned his journeys into music: the Italian and Scottish symphonies and the Hebrides overture. He also revived Bach's St Matthew Passion a century after it was written. The recordings here were made for Musopen and released into the public domain.
